September Fun at Virginia Beach

The summer is over but the fun continues at Virginia Beach. Here are some September events to put on your calendar. [caption id="attachment_1693" align="alignleft" width="309"] via Neptune Festival[/caption] Neptune’s Senior Gala Remember the big band sound of the ‘40s and how much fun it was to jitterbug to the lively tunes? You can relive this era on September 20 at the Neptune’s Senior Gala held in the Virginia Beach Convention Center. Glen Boswick and the Sound of Swing will provide live music for the enchanted evening. Tickets are $15 per person, and light refreshments are included in the price. Hours are from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. The address is 1000 19 th Street. End of Summer Bay Bash Grab your honey and head to the Bay Bash on September 15, so you can dance to live music under the stars at the beautiful beachfront. Plenty of food will be available. Oktoberfest

On September 16, Oktoberfest Eastern Virginia will be held at the Hunt Club Farm. [caption id="attachment_1679" align="alignleft" width="349"] via Hampton Roads Events[/caption] It is the local version of the huge Bavarian folk festival that attracts 6 million people globally every year. Even if you don’t have a drop of German blood in your ancestry, it’s always interesting to experience the cultures that make up the great American melting pot. The event will feature festival games, live music and dance performances, along with German beers and food. Artisan vendors will be on hand as well. Hours are from noon to 6 p.m., and admission starts at $25. The address is 2388 London Bridge Road. Oceana Air Show The Oceana Air Show on September 16 and 17 will feature thrilling performances by the Blue Angles, in addition to a concert, exhibits and food. Hours are from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and the location is the Naval Air Station Oceana at 1750 Tomcat Boulevard.

American Music Festival

Mark your calendars for September 1 to 3, when the 24 th Annual American Music Festival will be held at Virginia Beach. [caption id="attachment_1667" align="alignleft" width="311"] via Virginia Beach[/caption] One of the largest events of its kind on the East Coast, the affair will offer music for every taste.  Fans can hear the hit songs of a broad spectrum of more than 20 talented  groups, with headliners 311, Michael Franti & Spearhead, 3 Doors Down, Rebelution and The Wallflowers performing on the main stage at 5 th Street, and numerous local and regional bands performing at the 17 th , 24 th , and 31 st Street Stages. Tickets for main stage acts for each day are $20 in advance and $25 the day of the show, while preferred viewing tickets are $40 and $45 the day of the show. FunkFest Beach Party

Funk, a music genre that debuted in the 1960s, is an African-American blend of soul, R&B and soulful jazz. [caption id="attachment_1653" align="alignleft" width="310"] via Virginia Beach[/caption] The music’s rhythmic beat makes it very danceable, and in fact, it had a strong influence on the disco music of the 1970s. Legendary artists of the style include James Brown, George Clinton, Sly and the Family Stone and The Ohio Players. On August 25 and 26, you can enjoy the hits of this era at the FunkFest Beach Party . The concerts begin at 6 p.m. on Friday and 5:30 p.m. on Saturday. East Coast Surfing Championships

On August 20 to 27, hundreds of surfers will descend on Virginia Beach to compete in the Coastal Edge East Coast Surfing Championships . [caption id="attachment_1646" align="alignleft" width="318"] via YouTube[/caption] This major competition will award titles and prizes, but most of all, it’s a celebration of the sheer joy of the sport. Even if you wouldn’t dream of setting foot on a surfboard, it will be nice to watch the amazing skill of those who ride the waves on nothing but a piece of fiberglass or plastic. While the centerpiece of the event is surfing, the festivities will include food and other activities. Mark your calendars for this fun party.
