During this time of year the boardwalk has many family-friendly events that are fun for all. Coming up on July 27, the area will host the Hermit Crab Challenge, a lighthearted celebration that the New York Daily News has included in its ranking of the 10 Wackiest Festivals in the World. In the Crustacean Beauty Pageant, hermit crabs compete to see which contestant has the most creatively and beautifully decorated display. Winners of past years include entries done in imaginative themes like Spider Crab and Beauty and the Crab. But the event isn’t about beauty alone; it’s about speed as well. Another part of the festivity is the Crustaceous 500 Crab Races, a competition where the claw that makes it to the finish line first is awarded the prize.
