International Sandsculpting Championships

via MotorHome Magazine On September 28 through October 7, one of the most popular area galas will be held – the International Sandsculpting Championships. At this signature event of the Neptune Festival, competitors will come from the far corners of the globe to create amazing sculptures from the sand, as well as vie for awards and prizes. The talent displayed by the masterpieces is always absolutely amazing, with the entries filling a tent the size of a football field. In addition to contests by experts, the championships will have an amateur division. The event even includes classes in sandsculpting taught by a pro. Admission is $5 for adults and free for children under 12. Hours are from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. The location is the beach between 1 st and 10 th Streets. Oceana Air Show

via Classic Warbirds September 22 and 23 are the dates of the Oceana Air Show, an inspiring event that will showcase the skills and training of our wonderful military. In addition to the exciting displays of plane maneuvers, the gala will include exhibits, food vendors and other activities. On both days, the flying starts at 10 a.m., and the famous Blue Angels will perform at 3 p.m. While the show is located at the Naval Air Station (NAS) Oceana at 1750 Tomcat Boulevard, a free concert will be held at the oceanfront at 6:30 p.m. on  Saturday night at the 31 st Street Stage. The United States Fleet Forces Band and Four Star Edition will perform. During the sunset, the Navy will do three flyovers over the beach; and at sundown, a parachute team will jump down and be presented to the audience. In September, the good times will continue to roll with two athletic events: a music-infused running marathon and a surfing competition. These and other festivities are part of what makes a trip to Virginia Beach so special. via Rock N Roll Marathon Series Rock ‘N’ Roll Marathon Are you a runner? Even if you aren’t, you’ll enjoy attending the annual Rock ‘N’ Roll Marathon on September 1 and 2. For 20 years, this hugely popular Labor Day Weekend event has been held in conjunction with the American Music Festival. It’s different from most marathons, as it features live bands, drum lines, DJs and cheer teams. Participants can choose from a half marathon, 5K and 1 mile, so there is something for everyone. American Music Festival

via Virginia Is for Lovers On August 31 to September 1, Labor Day Weekend, the long-awaited American Music Festival will be held at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront. Because it will feature a broad variety of genres, including country, rock, jazz and R&B, you’re sure to come across a concert that suits your taste perfectly. The event is the largest outdoor music extravaganza on the East Coast, bringing regional and national artists together to perform at a giant stage at 5 th Street, along with other stages along the Boardwalk. While tickets costing $25 are required to attend concerts at the main stage, performances at the 17 th , 24 th and 31 st Street Parks are free. FunkFest Beach Party

Before you get into a fall mode, you’ll want to attend the FunkFest Beach Party on August 24 and 25. Funk music, originating in the ‘60s, is a rhythmic blend of soulful jazz, soul music and R&B. The event will feature performances by legends like James Brown and The Ohio Players, as well as dance contests, food and merchandise vendors. Admission is free. Concerts are from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. on both days. The location is the beach at 24 th Street. Miller Jazz Series Anyone who loves jazz will enjoy the Miller 2018 Jazz Series on September 6 at the Sandler Center for the Performing Arts. The concert will feature Jimmy Webb, Joni Mitchell, J.D.
