1940s Valentine’s Hangar Dance

Have you ever watched people jitterbug on TV to the great swing tunes of the 40s and thought it looked like marvelous fun? [caption id="attachment_1376" align="alignleft" width="269"] via Military Aviation Museum[/caption] This pleasure can be yours on the enchanted evening of February 11 at the Valentine’s Hangar Dance. Picture yourself and your sweetheart dressed in vintage 40s attire and cutting a rug to music from Terry Chesson Jump 'n Jive Orchestra. Plenty of tasty eats will be available as well. If you don’t know how to do the dances of the 40s, don’t let that keep you away. Swing Virginia members will be on hand to teach the jitterbug, East Coast swing and the lindy hop. Most people aren’t familiar with hangar dances. These events were held in airplane hangars during WWII to raise funds for the war effort. Polar Plunge Festival

During winter, hearty souls in various parts of the world take a brief but cold dip in a body of water – an activity referred to as a polar plunge. You can be either a participant or spectator at such an event in Virginia Beach on February 3 and 4. The location is the beach between 30 th to 40 th Streets. Sandler Center Performances

The Sandler Center is a local treasure, as it offers a variety of performances throughout the year. [caption id="attachment_1352" align="alignleft" width="273"] via Sandler Center for the Performing Arts[/caption] Attending one of the entertainments is a nice way to liven up a wintry day or evening. Here is what the this month's agenda holds. January 13 is the date of the Bobby Bones Funny & Alone Comedy Tour . The comedian will regale the audience with stories about growing up in rural Arkansas. Showtime is at 8 p.m., and tickets are $30.50 at the door. The Symphonicity: Lollipop Concert will be held on January 14. An afternoon of fun for children and their families, it will include face painting and other activities in addition to the concert. The show starts at 3 p.m., but guests are encouraged to come at 2 p.m., when children can learn about and touch musical instruments. Tickets are $8 on the day of the event. Winter Wildlife Festival

On January 20 to 22, Virginia Beach Parks & Recreation will present a Winter Wildlife Festival . [caption id="attachment_1340" align="alignleft" width="299"] via Winter Wildlife Festival 2017[/caption] The entertaining, educational event is a good opportunity to learn about the wildlife that make their abode in our area. Some of the excursions are already filled up, so check the website to book the ones in which you are most interested. The Princess Anne Recreation Center will be the venue for the non-excursion part of the festival on January 21. Attendees can browse through environmental displays, attend workshops and see live animals. Children’s activities will be available at the neighboring library.
