Let’s Go Hiking
via Great Outdoors Provision Co. |
Late winter is a good time to go hiking in Virginia Beach. Exercising in
the great outdoors energizes the body, while spending time in quiet scenic
areas soothes the mind. Whether you like to gaze upon water landscapes or
prefer forest pathways, you’ll find it all here. Below are our top
recommendations for hiking trails:
- · Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge: The shorter trails, which range from one-half mile to one mile in length, are open in winter. This blissfully secluded area of beaches, marshes and forests is home to many varieties of waterfowl. It’s also a mesmerizing spot for watching sunrises and sunsets. Admission is free.
- · Lake Lawson/Lake Smith Natural Area: The 1.5 miles of hiking paths can be walked in 30 minutes to an hour. Expect to see bald cypress knees and English ivy in the woods, along with largemouth bass and bluegills in the lake. Across the water, visitors can glimpse the Sajo Farm manor house, a wonderful Georgian-style estate that dates back to the 1930s. Admission to the lake area is free.
- · Stumpy Lake Natural Area: Hikers will find 1.6 miles of trails that can be covered in an hour. Hushed and mysterious, this wetland forest has crooked trees and a plethora of birds. The morning mist enhances the appealing ambiance. Admission is free.
