Winter Whale Watching Rides

One of the pleasures involved in a camping trip to Virginia Beach during the cooler months is a boat ride to see the ocean wildlife.

During December through March, two of nature’s most awe-inspiring creatures, humpback and fin whales, can be spotted in the Chesapeake Bay as they migrate to points north. These massive inhabitants of the sea have been known to flip their tails and wave their front flippers, seemingly putting on a show for the delight of whale watchers.

You may also catch glimpses of an array of waterfowl, such as brown pelicans, double-crested cormorants and northern gannets, making dramatic dives into the water. Jellyfish, turtles and dolphins may be seen as well.

If you go on a cold day, dress very warmly because temperatures can feel colder out on the water. Local boat tour operators that offer these exciting excursions include Virginia Aquarium: Sea Adventures and Rudee Flipper.

Shamrock Sports & Fitness Expo

On March 17 and 18, the Shamrock Sports & Fitness Expo will be held at 1000 19th Street. Sports enthusiasts will enjoy browsing through the equipment, footwear and accessories. Hours are from noon to 9 p.m. on Friday and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday. Admission is free.
